It’s been clear for some time that the music industry is not about to solve all of its problems itself. Whereas there are more direct to consumer possibilities which arise in the digital age, the industry has already learned some pretty painful lessons when it comes to trying to control the new distribution chain. The lessons of pressplay and the early days of MusicNet can only emphasise the degree to which the industry needs partners with the relevant technical and entrepreneurial expertise to build the new models that can become sustainable sources of revenue in the digital age. Indeed in an environment where physical sales continue to dwindle, the future success of the music industry depends to a large extent on finding these new digital services that can begin to make up for that shortfall in hysical income.

The MidemNet Lab initiative, whose call for entries is hosted by Music Ally, aims to ncover the next wave of digital talent by showcasing the talents of 15 companies from across the world at MIDEM 2010. If you want to know who the next Spotify is likely to be then you would do well to keep an eye on these 15 companies. What’s more, the successful entrepreneurs behind Spotify (Daniel Ek), Topspin (Ian Rogers), the Hype Machine (Anthony Volodkin), R2G/Wa3.cn (Matthew Daniel), Soundcloud (Alexander Ljung) and Seesmic (Loïc le Meur) will also be playing a role in the selection of those companies.

The application forms are now online (see link below) and companies are free to apply until 27th October.

It costs nothing to apply and the winners will also benefit from free accommodation and a free pass to MIDEM as well as the ability to showcase and network with other delegates in a permanent exhibition space dedicated to the MidemNet Lab initiative within the Palais.

We’ve been involved in a number of different initiatives to find new talent in the digital space but this truly is the most ambitious we have worked on to date. This initiative is going to provide some real insight into the future growth of the music business so please spread the word and let’s ensure that we reach all the possible applicants for this competition.

Just go to www.musically.com/midemnetlab and fill in the application form.

Thanks for your help.
