LONDON - JUNE 15: (FILE PHOTO) Steve Jobs, Ch...Image by Getty Images via Daylife

I just ran across this really amazing and very personal, moving video of Steve Jobs at Standford University: “…drawing from some of the most pivotal points in his life, Steve Jobs, chief executive officer and co-founder of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, urged graduates to pursue their dreams and see the opportunities in life’s setbacks — including death itself — at the university’s 114th Commencement on June 12, 2005…”

Steve has some very important messages for us (summarized below); I think they offer some perfect reflection points as we move into 2010 (even though his talk is actually 5 years old!):

  • The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking!
  • You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.
  • Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma.
  • Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish

A transcript is here, btw.   Wherever you may celebrate new year’s (I will be in sunny Barcelona)… watch this video. And as to Midem 2010, let’s make this our motto for our conversations and meetings: Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish!

  1. One of the most motivating pieces I’ve ever read is the first chapter of Steve Chandler’s “100 Ways To Motivate Yourself”, entitled “Get on your deathbed”. It’s a must read book that changed my life and will change yours.
Ultimately you get one shot at life, so don’t waste your most precious currency – time. Think of it this way too, when they plant your headstone, it’ll state your birth date and the date you left this mortal coil. inbetween there will be a dash. That dash is your life…
Looking at life like this puts a deadline on your success, it’s not a morbid existence, its the complete opposite, its an existence that empowers you, and lets you live your live as it was meant to be.
Whatever you have been putting of until tomorrow do it today, do it with conviction, and make it count…
Wishing all Midem attendees a Happy New Year, and looking forward to a successful conference at Cannes in this new decade of opportunity!
