As Midem winds down every year, invariably, folks congregate the last night in the bar at the Carlton to compare notes. “How were your meetings?” Did you close any new deals?” “Did your hear David Renzer’s speech?'” “Wasn’t Amanda Palmer outrageous?”

But what’s interesting is the question itself. After other major events, I’m queried, “How was CES?” or “How were the Grammys?”, but, regarding Midem, it’s a unique question, “How was YOUR Midem?” Midem is, admittedly, a personal experience for every attendee. There are so many companies to explore, so many speakers to absorb, so many new relationships to establish and so many old friends to reconnect with. Some walk away inspired, others find themselves still in a period of transition.

Well, for me, it was one of my best Midems ever. After a couple of challenging years, Midem and Midemnet came back this year with a vengeance. While attendance slipped a bit, there was a sense of optimism and purpose this year that wasn’t apparent the past few years. We seem to have turned the corner, gotten over the ‘good old days’, and are purposefully looking forward to profiting from new paradigms.

The integration of Midemnet and Midem was an overdue, much-needed change, and it worked. The debut of Midem+ was well-received, those who signed up seemed to find its value.

I really enjoyed my interviews with Jeff Hayzlett, Patrick Walker and Daniel Ek (watch them on MIDEM’s YouTube channel). My meetings were fruitful and the new friendships created are invaluable. But for me, the high points were when people stopped me in the Palais, on the Croisette and in various restaurants to tell me, “this was the best Midemnet ever!” That makes it all worthwhile. Dominique, Stephane, Virginie, Olivia, Benjamin and the rest of the Midem conference team joined with me and the Visionary Committee: Harvey Goldsmith, Terry McBride, Ralph Simon and Bruce Houghton, to put together a program that would resonate with the times. We hope that it met your expectations.

So, I have to ask……….how was your Midem??
