Interview: Discovr’s David McKinney: “Companies get noticed when they make great things”

MidemNet Lab-winning app Discovr is now topping the charts worldwide. Here, its creator gives some essential tips for success

By James Martin

Music discovery app Discovr was one of the three winners of MidemNet Lab, our music startups competition. Since then, the iPad and iPhone app, made by Australia’s Jammbox, has gone from strength to strength: mid-May, it notched up over 150,000 downloads in three days; and it is now the number one music app in 12 countries, and in the top 3 in 13 others, including the UK and the US. We caught up with founder David McKinney at SXSW and discussed his progress since January; dealing with music rights for apps in the light of the Echo Nest/Def Jam deal; how music startups can get noticed, notably at big events like MIDEM or SXSW; Music Hack Days and more besides! Enjoy…

Apologies for the clanking glass-collection noise in the background during the first two minutes of the film ;)

& check out this quick demo of Discovr right here (also made at MIDEM!)
