Brazil is the world’s eighth biggest music market, according to IFPI, the international recorded-music industry trade organisation. In terms of digital music sales, it is the world’s 12th biggest. Total recorded music sales in 2012 rose nearly 9% to $257m, although PwC puts this figure at a more optimistic $391m.

Also in 2012, Ai Se Eu Te Pego made Michel Telo (photo) the first solo artist to hit the US Billboard Top 100 singles chart in 50 years. The song went on to sell 7 million units.
