Emily White: How was your experience at MIDEM this year?

Joe B. Conyers III: It was fantastic to see Midem’s growth from last year to the current. The Palais was abuzz with activity. The panel quality this year was top notch – so good it became hard to choose which ones to attend when they overlapped.

> Can you speak about MIDEM’s global impact?

It was great to see the usual cadre of international delegates from all over the world and thrilling to witness a notable representation of Southeast Asian countries. I hope we continue to see these companies come to Europe, as well as expand globally. I also hope we continue to see growth in the number of Africans attending, as their industry starts its assent.

My team and I were able to meet with a number of potential and existing clients and partners senior executives. We were also able to meet with a large number of societies in one place.

> How do you envision MIDEM’s future?

One of the biggest things still missing from Midem’s former glory is the labels. I wonder, how can the market make it important for them to come again? As DSPs expand and localize, will labels see value in sending staff to go pitch Euro or World based playlisters? Or is this too niche? In order to return…

> Any other thoughts?

It was excellent to have an uptick in PRO attendance. I hope that more of their staff would attend, rather than just executives, as it would entice more publishers to bring more of their staff, multiplying the connections that can be made. As much as we live in a digital world, it’s always nice to meet your foreign counterparts face to face, especially away from both of your offices. That and the south of France in June is a fantastic time to visit, and the food is top notch.
